The Black Horse - Braunstone Gate

The Black Horse - Leicester

A new spirit for an old favourite

A traditional pub, under new management, situated right in the heart of Leicester on Braunstone Gate, bringing a great range of beers including 6 cask, 2 craft and 5 lagers from the very best brewers, along with a small but perfectly formed wine and spirits list, some wonderful ciders and plenty of choice in soft drinks too!

We try to support local business as much as we possibly can and we're dog friendly so why not join us to enjoy a laid back space with plenty going on and lots of good company.

It’s up to you whether you join us or just pop in for a takeout!

Easy Wednesdays
3PM - 7PM

Pubs needn't be loud. In fact, they can be an oasis of calm. Join us for Leicester's only dedicated 'Quiet Pub' afternoon. Bring your crossword, book or classical CDs and have a drink. Relax.

  • No excessive noise, just fine classical music, easy jazz, light drone and some quiet banter to get away from it all
  • Cracking ales, a decent selection of wines and spirits, tea, coffee and light bites
  • Composer or Jazz artist of the week. Requests taken click here to ask for your favourite

A little bit of history

Serving the local community since circa 1850 were licensees: George Kenny - 1864, John Gilbert - 1874, James Day - 1877, John Hubbard - 1879, Elizabeth Hubbard - 1885, James Gilbert - 1901 Alice Gilbert, who took over after James' death, 1921, Silas Abram (Silas had married James Gilberts daughter Rose). Rose passed away in the pub in 1923. Terence Cox - 1953.

In May 1958, police raided the Black Horse on suspicion that the pub was being used for illegal betting activities. Two individuals operating the betting scheme were caught and fined £20 each, while several customers found in possession of betting slips were also fined. The licensee, Terence Cox, had been at the Black Horse for only five weeks and may have known little about what was taking place. Nevertheless, he was found guilty of permitting betting on the premises and was fined £15.

Music at The Black Horse Leicester

Monday Music Club & Thursday Open Mic

Monday night is Music Club Night at The Black Horse.

Musicians have been sharing their enjoyment of music since 1976, making it the longest running music club night in Leicester. Come along between 8.30pm and midnight for a jam or just to listen to some great local talent.

We can't guarantee it but if you ask nicely, Mike Sole might give you a ride home by steam engine. Mike is a regular patron and performer at The Black Horse and from time to time turns up on a steam engine.
